How to Install Apps from Unknown Sources on Android
Android devices generally don’t allow users to install apps that are not available on the Google Play Store. However, there are some application developers who do not register their applications in the Play Store, so users have to download them via the official website and install them manually.
However, it is not the default setting so users can still install apps from sources other than Google Play Store.
Reporting from Make Tech Easier, here’s how to install apps from unknown sources on Android:
1. Install apps from unknown sources on Android 8.0 Oreo and 9.0 Pie
On Android 8.0, users need to grant permission to certain apps which are allowed to install APKs from unknown sources.
To set this permission, go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Special app access > Install unknown apps.
In the menu, select the application that you want the user to give permission to install from unknown sources. Then tap Allow from this source to enable unknown sources for the app.
2. Install apps from unknown sources on Android 7 Nougat or earlier
To install from unknown sources on Android 7 or earlier versions, users can enable and disable the feature directly from the settings panel.
First, open App Drawer > Settings > Security & fingerprint. On devices that do not have a fingerprint feature, users will only see the Security option. Select the option to view the device’s security settings.
After that select the Unknown sources option to control whether apps from outside the Play Store should be allowed to be installed on the device. Activate the toggle to the On position and the feature has been activated on the user’s phone.
Then the user will get a pop-up notification that mentions the risks if installing applications from unknown sources. Tap OK to activate the feature.
Once the feature is active, tap on the APK file that has been downloaded and you want the user to install. The APK will be automatically installed on the user’s device without any problems.
